Department of Clinical Biochemistry
Departmental Focus:
Summary

The lab of clinical biochemistry covers clinical biochemical detection, teaching and scientific research. 8 members in our laboratory include 2 associate professors, 5assistant professors, and 1 lab technician. The lab provides over 40 items of clinical biochemical detection. Apart from this, a variety of molecular diagnostic techniques are also conducted in the lab.

1. Teaching
Medical biochemistry is taught in undergraduate master's degree study (general medicine, medical laboratory sciences) and postgraduate courses (M.Sc.). Medical biochemistry I (structure of macromolecules) and II(metabolic pathways) is lectured in 1st and 2nd semesters of the first year of general medicine degree.General biochemistry, medical biochemistry I and II, and hormone biochemistry is lectured in 1st to 4th semesters for medical laboratory sciences students. The courses are lectured for clinical biochemistry M.Sc. degree including: general biochemistry, metabolism, bioinformatic, advanced molecular biology, enzymology, tissue and organ biochemistry, and immunochemistry. Clinical biochemistry is taught by means of the discussion medical case reports in the 3rdsemester of master's degree study.

2. Science and research
- Study of genesexpression in type 2 diabetes.
-Study of type 2 diabetes candidate gene variations and mutations.
- Molecular signaling of free fatty acid induced insulin resistance.
- Biochemistry of free radicals, oxidative cell damage and antioxidative systems.
- Tumor markers and biomarkers of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.
- Stem cell differentiation and gene therapy for wound healing.

3. Postgraduate specialized education
Department of Clinical Biochemistry ensures specialized education of medical doctors, masters, laboratory technicians, and non-medical laboratory specialists in clinical biochemistry. The department received accreditation in all of these four mentioned fields.

4. Laboratory
In our lab, several methods to detect materials include routine test for detection of biochemical parameters in blood and other body fluids, real-time PCR, protein electrophoresis and blotting, PCR (nested, touchdown, ARMS, etc.), nucleic acids electrophoresis, ELISA, cell culture, chromatography, site directed mutagenesis, protein purification, molecular cloning, gene knockdown.
